Attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) is the model of perseverance as he defends in the late '80's Walter McMillian, a black man in Alabama (To Kill a Mockingbird's Monroeville, ironic enough) over corrupt murder charges. Although the arc of defense is usually the same in reality as well as this drama, Just Mercy, each incident will hit fair minded audiences in the gut each time.
Director Dustin Daniel Cretton keeps the pace of Bryan's investigation apace, from the early days as a new Harvard trained lawyer to the journey to the Alabama Supreme Court and back. During that time the audience gets a stark reminder that standing up against bigotry and corruption (Alabama cops do not come off like justice driven officer) as Stevenson does is not for the weak, but definitely for those who seek justice, especially for underserved minorities.
Although Walter having been unjustly convicted is established early on, it's the undoing of that conviction (Walter is awaiting his execution date) that provides suspense, with multiple incidents of denial in the court system. Meanwhile Stevenson (he wrote the account on which the film is based) gives a few too many Hollywood-like speeches about the prejudice that allows an innocent man to lose part or all of his life fighting a system that caters to the wealthy and the white.
The strength of this predictable drama, unavoidable given the story is based on a real drama that is replayed in courtrooms daily, and it seems in the South more often than normal, is the depiction of helplessness for the unjustly convicted and the efficacy of tenaciousness joined to truth. The corrosion of justice and the heroism of humane people is on display and a reminder that never giving up is the antidote to hopelessness.
Hope is the dominant motif of Just Mercy, and it's just and merciful.

I was fortunate to see a premiere screening 3 weeks ago in Los Angeles and Bryan Stevenson was present. I know about Stevenson's work so my hope is those who see the film are inspired to educate themselves on this issue as well as getting a better understanding of the systemic issues which still are a cancer on our society.

I agree that addressing racism is a collective effort that needs to be address from all races and not just the minority oness targeted! Also, I havent been to the movies in years but there two movies that I want to see in 2020 and this is one of them.

As the movie opens, it is "1975 Parkersburg, West Virginia" as we see several teenagers (one of them a young Bilott) go swimming in a lake that we later see being sprayed with chemicals. We then go to "1998 Cincinnati, Ohio", and Rob has just made partner at Taft, one of the large law firms in Cincinnati. Then a stranger shows up who is from Parkersburg and knows Rob's grandmother. The stranger, Wilbur Tennant, claims that chemicals have ruined his farm, he has the VHS tapes to prove it, and can Rob please represent him.... At this point we're 10 min. into the movie, but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all turns out. Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from Todd Haynes, whose prior movie, the excellent "Carol" was coincidentally also filmed here in Cincinnati (where I live). But that is where the comparisons stop. Here, Haynes brings to the big screen the long battle that Bilott fought against chemical giant DuPont. The film starts a bit tentative in my opinion, but after the first half hour, the tension doesn't let up as DuPont is fighting with all of its might against Bilott. This movie is a labor of love for Mark Ruffalo, who stars and also co-produces. I've seen a lot of the films that Ruffalo has made in his career, and I don't know that he's ever been better, playing the almost mousy yet determined lawyer. Anne Hathaway seems underused as the supportive spouse but as the movie goes deeper, her role expands. The movie was filmed in early 2019 in and around Cincinnati, and the downtown area is featured extensively, including Fountain Square, the Queen City Club, the Hall of Mirrors at the Netherland Plaza, etc. The movie had a red carpet premiere here in Cincinnati a week before it got a limited release. This weekend it got a wide release, and the Friday early evening screening where I saw it at my art-house theater here in Cincinnati was attended okay (about 20 people). This movie will create strong word of mouth, and if it manages to pick up some award nominations (as it is expected), this could have a decent run in the theaters. If you are interested in a tense legal drama where Mark Ruffalo shines, I'd readily suggest you check this out, be it in the theater, on VOD, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray. December 10, 2019 Format: Prime Video This is a very important film about one lawyer's fight to protect the health of all Americans. It is a David and Goliath story about the power that is currently held by mega corporations, and how they stay above the law. Tim Robbins, Anne Hathaway, and Mark Ruffalo give stellar performances, and the screenplay keeps the viewer engrossed in the film until the end. We all need these films to help educate and inform us of what is really happening in the world right now. I highly recommend it, although the PG13 rating is a precaution for younger family members due to its mature theme. December 26, 2019 Format: Blu-ray I don't often give anything 5 stars. This movie fully earns every single one. The story is complex, but put forth in a way an average viewer can easily follow. It builds and builds in a gripping slow burn from beginning to end. It is firmly based upon, and is faithful to, a true story in which the deliberate actions of a few brought great harm to many. The story is both spellbinding and sickening, simultaneously. The writing, acting, directing, and cinematography are all superb. This is one of the best movies of 2019. December 27, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Dark Waters surpasses its genre designations to unfold a true story by showcasing a medley of great performances, punctuated by a visual palette that creates an appropriate tone and mood. Todd Haynes directs with a delicate sensibility and wondrously highlights the tension in the undercurrent of the film. A superb film all in all.

I'm a sucker for a good ol' little-man-against-the-system movie (think "Erin Brockovich" and "Silkwood. of which "Dark Waters" is the latest example. I was mostly intrigued to see what Todd Haynes would do with the formula, since he's explored such a unique creative touch in films I've adored ( Safe. Far from Heaven" and films I've felt more lukewarmly about ( Carol. I'm Not There. Surprisingly, he charges straight down the line with "Dark Waters." This is an interesting if not engrossing film, and it feels like it could be directed by anybody.
That's not necessarily a bad thing when you have an actor as good as Mark Ruffalo in the lead, because the movie gets out of his way and lets him do his thing. He gives a restrained, compelling performance and resists the urge to overplay the everyman-as-hero aspects of this story. This film is more "Silkwood" than "Erin Brockovich." As much fun as it was to watch Julia Roberts tearing around the screen giving everyone a what-for, she wasn't once believable as a working class broad. Ruffalo, on the other hand, IS believable as a modest attorney in Rust Belt America, and he builds a full performance out of subtle, quiet moments rather than any big, showy, Oscar clip ones. This is basically a one-man show, though he's given able support by Tim Robbins, who's worth the price of admission for the scene where he hands a young cocky attorney his ass, and Bill Pullman, gruff and hilarious and using an accent from God knows where. The weak link in the cast is Anne Hathaway as Ruffalo's wife, who, for all of her sweetness and goody-goodiness as an actress, is miscast as a wholesome, Christian mom.
I can't think too much about "Dark Waters" because it will keep me up nights and will give me a phobia about ever drinking or eating anything ever again.

The lodge at crater lake. Who went to see this video, just because there was news that the film was using a blackpink song soundtrack? 😂😂😜. Everyone loves a booth. 😁. As with many other horror stories, things seem to go wrong when you put any number of young people in the woods. With "The Lodge", this is no exception. A young couple, away from the world and set on a non-stop drug-fueled and sexually-charged romantic getaway, have rented the eponymous lodge. But plans go awry when they encounter the caretaker (soap opera guest star Kevin McClatchy), a friendly but seriously deranged woodsman. There is much good that can be said about "The Lodge". For a film that is starring and created by completely unknown people, I was impressed with the final product. The writer (Deb Havener) went through extra effort to create a background for the characters (drummer from a rich family with a music degree, for example). The directing is solid, although I question why there are so many shots of the fields (it seems some shots and the opening credits served no purpose other than to stretch out the length). Music, lighting and all the technical aspects were of a respectable quality (not Hollywood, but at least straight-to-DVD). The two male leads are on opposite ends of the spectrum in the talent department. The young lover was nothing special... he could have been anyone and have been played by anyone, I just had no reason to care about him. The caretaker, on the other hand, was dynamic and menacing. At times I felt he was creepy, at others I felt sorry for him, as he appeared more lonely than sadistic. The range and diversity of his emotions would be hard to put in one character and remain consistent, but yet this was achieved flawlessly. If there's one redeeming factor of this film, it's the caretaker. On a side note, this film raises questions about relationships that I'd like to touch upon (sorry, horror fans). We are clued in early on that the male lead plans on proposing to the female lead, and we have to give him credit for choosing a beautiful locale and a gorgeous woman. But yet, the constant fighting makes it clear they may not be ready for long term commitment. What is the message here? Are we saying that marriage proposals are good and can solve problems? Are we saying that stressful situations can draw people closer? As I often opine, didn't "Speed" teach us anything? The biggest problem with "The Lodge" is the sheer blandness. While there is a fair level of success in creating a creepy atmosphere, at the same time we are rather limited because there are only three key characters. Unlike other horror films, no one can die here or the film has to end prematurely. So the suspense has to be drawn out as long as possible, which works at times and fails at others. Time is also filled with countless sex scenes that go nowhere (sorry, guys). And if you want gore, you're not going to see much here (low body count equals low blood flow). I found "The Lodge" to be enjoyable and watchable (which, these days, is more than I can say for many films). But there was nothing here I haven't seen in a dozen other films. I give Deb Havener credit for the development but her plot writing needs work. For another story involving two people alone in a rented room, see "Vacancy". The sheer intensity of that one makes "The Lodge" look like a Lifetime Network film. And that's not good.

I guessed ET seen the film sooo many times love it. Heather O'Rourke was only 12 years old when she passed away very sad. Love your vlog going to different film sets.
